Day Trips to the Mackerel Islands, Western Australia
A day’s escape works wonders. If you’re seeking a slice of island life, our day trips to Thevenard Island offer exactly that – a unique, all-inclusive, 8-hour experience of life on and around the Mackerel Islands.
Transfers via our boat charter take 45 minutes and tours are available daily from Onslow at 7:30am (weather permitting). On arrival you’ll be escorted around the resort and facilities with our island team, then spend the day beachcombing, snorkelling, beach fishing, nature walking, or simply kicking back and soaking up the calming vibes and colours of your surrounds.
Here’s what you’ll love:
Fishing the Mackerel Islands is nothing short of awesome, be you a master angler or a rookie with a hook. Wander the beach casting lures for trevally or queenfish, or grab some bait, sit back and wait for that Norwest snapper to show interest in your game of tug-o-war!
Snorkel sites and areas mapped on the Mackerel Islands snorkelling trail lead you on a journey of luminous underwater discovery accessible just metres from the beach. A vast variety of corals, coral structures and diverse marine life habitats can be explored, ranging from the visually stunning to the environmentally unique.
At low tide, you can walk out to some of these areas, making it easy for young and old to explore. Friends and family can watch from their beach cabin while you roam around the reef structure.
Thevenard Island is a gazetted nature reserve. There is 11 kilometres of shells and rock formations among the ever-changing nature of its beautiful clean beaches. The island is home to many bird species, including kestrels, quail, godwits, plovers, sandpipers and harriers.
Games & Fun Stuff
For the action-seekers, or if you’ve simply had enough lazing by the sea, we have loads of games and activities for you and the family, including beach cricket, volleyball, nature trekking, SUP boarding, plaka boat hire and kids games.
Your hosts will prepare and cook a classic ‘island style’ barbecue lunch overlooking the beach. All of our food is freshly and locally sourced of course, and menu items vary depending on seasonal availability.
*If you have specific dietary requirements, please call us to discuss your needs, or submit a request and we will respond within 24 hours.
Recline on the shaded deck of our elevated beachfront cabin with family and friends while you replenish with a cold drink and snacks. Watch marine life jump around in the bay, hang out with the friendly island quails, enjoy the sociable waves of our resident ‘Ta-Ta’ lizards – named for exactly that reason – they wave ta-ta at you!
Whatever the season there is always an abundance of wild life to observe. Experience turtles nesting, whales breaching and an endless amount of birdlife. Local guides are on hand to point these out.
Maximise your day by hiring one our Plaka vessels and explore the many reefs the island has on offer. One person must hold a valid Recreational Skippers Ticket.
