Escape to Thevenard Island on a full or half day trip and experience a slice of island life in this unique adventure playground. Enjoy true relaxation or be as active as you like surrounded by sand, water and nature.
Day trips are offered on various days of the week, subject to availability of seats on our ferry transfers, weather dependent and minimum numbers apply. Priced from $90 per person, bookings are essential. We also offer packages for companies as an excellent idea for team building, corporate retreats or business lunches.
Spend a few hours of fun on the island, hire fishing gear, snorkelling sets, kayaks and SUP boards, or a plaka boat if you have a recreational skipper’s licence, from our activity centre. Visit our island general store to buy BBQ packs, snacks and drinks and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach. In the summer months, go turtle spotting as the island gets ready for its turtle hatching season!
Here’s what you’ll love
Escape the Pilbara heat and cool down in the calm ocean waters of the island’s bays. Swim, paddle, splash around and float on your back under the ever changing colours of the sky.
Fishing the Mackerel Islands is nothing short of awesome, whether you’re a rookie or a master angler. Wander the beach casting lures for trevally or queenfish, or grab some bait, sit back and wait for that Norwest snapper to show interest in your game of tug-o-war.
Snorkel sites and areas mapped on the Mackerel Islands snorkelling trail lead you on a journey of luminous underwater discovery accessible just metres from the beach. A vast variety of corals, coral structures and diverse marine life habitats can be explored, ranging from the visually stunning to the environmentally unique.
At low tide, you can walk out on to some of the reefs making it easy for young and old to explore. Look for colourful fish, crabs and octopus.
Thevenard Island is a gazetted nature reserve, with 11 kilometres of shoreline full of shells and rock formations. Wander the water’s edge and discover ocean treasures on the beautiful clean beaches.
The island is home to many bird species, including kestrels, quails, godwits, plovers, sandpipers and harriers. Seabirds, such as terns and shearwaters, nest from October to January. Bring your binoculars and see how many you can spy.
Sit on the beach in front of the main bay, take in the blue ocean views and feel soothed by the sound of the waves. Replenish with cold drinks, snacks or lunch. Watch marine life jump around in the bay, hang out with the friendly island quails and enjoy the sociable waves of our resident ‘Ta-Ta’ lizards – named for exactly that reason – they wave ta-ta at you!
Games & Fun Stuff
For the action-seekers, or if you’ve simply had enough lazing by the sea, we have loads of games and activities for you and the family, including beach cricket, volleyball, nature trekking, kayaking, SUP boarding, plaka boat hire and kids games.
Whatever the season there is always an abundance of wildlife to observe. See turtles nesting on the beach, whales breaching offshore, dolphins and stingrays gliding through the clear waters, and much more. Local guides are on hand to point these out.
Maximise your day trip by hiring one of our plaka vessels to explore the many reefs surrounding the islands. One person must hold a valid recreational skipper’s ticket. The plakas are 4.4 meters long with a 40hp outboard motor, GPS and sounder, and fit 4 adults comfortably.
