Fish tales start here! Home to the Pilbara’s fishiest waters, many a fishing legend will happily recount the number of times they reeled in a thumping great Red Emperor, GT or Sailfish. The Mackerel Islands are the one fishing spot you can tell everyone about – there’s plenty to go around! Whatever your fishing style, boat fishing, beach fishing, or fly fishing, you’ll find all the action right here. Experience the species-rich waters surrounding the Mackerel Islands and discover some of our favourite fishing spots such as the famous Rosily Cay, or secret snorkelling bays, home to an abundance of fish life and crayfish. You can also bring your own boat and join one of our week-long Seafari tag-a-long events. Seafaris offer a fun, social and safe way to explore the Mackerel Islands with like-minded people, led by fishing guides and local experts to fast track your chance of fishing success.

Snorkelling & Diving

Snorkel fringing reefs and bombies accessible from the beach but best by boat. The ocean waters surrounding the Mackerel Islands boast a showcase of amazing sea life and untouched coral reefs. A huge underwater reward awaits for those who bring their own dive equipment and boat. Located just north of the world heritage listed Ningaloo Reef and the Exmouth Gulf, this is a dive playground for those who seek to discover new reef frontiers that have hardly been in contact with a human being! Scuba sites ranging from 3m – 18m are located in close proximity to Thevenard Island and guests who bring their own dive equipment can easily access these. Dive equipment can be hired in the region with advance notice through Pilbara Dive and Tours in Karratha. Whether you’re a scuba pro or you prefer to drift along the reef with a snorkel, the Mackerel Islands are where you’ll find an exhilarating underwater world.

Beach Fishing

Use your own fishing rod or hire one from us

Available all year

You don't need a boat to enjoy fishing on the island, our land based fishing is also awesome! Head to one of these spots:

Island Jetty
You can fish here all day, but high tide, first light and last light are the best times.
Try Halco twisty lures for Trevally, Queenfish and Threadfin Salmon.
Species such as Mangrove Jack, Spanish Flag, Emperor, Cod and Bluebone can be caught using either squid or mulies as bait.
A simple rig often works best, such as having a ball sinker on some 20-30lb leader, running straight down to your hook.
Squid come to the jetty, especially at night - ask a staff member for assistance in turning on the generator for the floodlight.

East End
Off the point, in front of the sandbags, is a good spot to try for Emperor, Bluebone, Cod and Coral Trout.
You may also encounter Trevally and Queenfish.
Keep your rig simple, with a ball sinker running to your hook, or a small lure.

Back Beach
High tide works best here.
Cast lures for Trevally and Queenfish.
Spangled Emperor can be caught with squid for bait at the western-most point.
You may also catch Longtom, Bluebone and small sharks.

Beach Cricket & Volleyball
